New build about to start in New Zealand |
|
|
Hi all
I have always wanted to do this but money kids and houses always got in the way. I am going to build the car here in New zealand to meet the local low volume build standards. A scratch built car that has never been registered here is sometimes quite a challange but I have spent the last few weeks working with a low volume certifier to meet the NZ/AUS road standards.
The 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch box section arrived today but the round tube is on back order so it will take another week to arrive. I will order the remaining material as I need it.
I already have the donor car, I managed to get hold a 89 MR2 last weekend complete except for the engine and gearbox. Funny thing was it was about 500 meters away from my house. I have never spoken to the guy before but I saw him pushing it of the way so he could mow the lawn. A couple of beers later and after I mowed his lawn for him, it was rolling down hill to my place.
I will purchase the body shell after I have completed the rolling chasis, having said that if you ever sell another car into NZ Steve let me know I may be able to split the transport costs
Total cost so far NZ$320 + a six pac

Beer as currency is what places us at the top of the evolutionary ladder.
Congrats on getting started. Let's see if we can get another NZ builder on board! _________________ Components, core kits, premium component kits and rollers now available |

Well not much progress here. I have spent the last few months working to finish off the house so building has not started yet. All the parts are sitting in the garage ready and the boat and my son's car are now clear of my workshop. No excuse now!
I have been talking to the LVV certifier in Hamilton that has to certify the build and although he can be very helpful he seams pretty much un-willing to move on the issue of not having doors! This is a big problem for me unless I want to keep transporting the part built chasis back and forth to another LVV certifier.
Steve what options are ther for doors on The LB1 ? OR do you plan to offer an upgrade to the LB2 plans with doors?
I have had a few e-mails from other wanting to build in New zealand and two of them are holding back for the same reason. I will let them know the results

Started to take shape |
|
|
Well the boat is gon and the kids have taken all their junk back to their own house so I started last week. The front end is assembled and tack welded ready for final TIG welding and the back axle is set out ready to start.
I am in the process of writing CNC programs to plasma cut the various brackets and other small parts needed these will fit on my little home made cutter so they wont take long.
I Have decided to just build the car as per the drawings supplied and not attempt to make it road leagal. Without doors its not going to get certified and if I purchase a retrofit kit later it will have to be completely re-certified again. They either have to go in as part of the initial build now, or not at all. So out they go and I will sell it off later as a track car, still no road legal car in NZ or OZ!!!
Total cost so far NZ$654 + the 6 pack |

Nice to hear the project is underway in earnest.
Yes, the authorities do not want us having FUN, they have almost killed the kit car game in Australia, England seems to be the only place with sensible regulations.......I looked into making mine road legal but I was looking at up to $2,000 additional in engineer / road law fees.
I hope you do use it as a competition car rather than just building it and selling it.
You will find once you start to really get into it you will begin to modify the plans / build to suit your own needs....I have made alterations to suit what I want as an end product.
Check with your motor sport governing body about the Roll Bar regulations to ensure you use the correct tube type, diameter, wall thickness and shape with the cross bracing. That was a major difference for me here in Australia from the plans.
I dont know about keeping tab on the cost ......I decided not to......just enjoy the build and it costs what it costs.....
I would be interested in talking to you off forum about making some brackets for me if your interested.
Keep up the good work ! |
