Fresh out of the molds - Dash/Windshield frame, Rear Valance |
|
|
The rear valance is a piece that attaches to the lower part of the rear clamshell and is a cosmetic enhancement to the rear bodywork. This part is a very lightweight hand laid fiberglass cloth of the highest quality.
Cost- $350
The Dash Windshield is a complicated piece to manufacture with multiple layups bonded together in final assembly before being pulled from the molds. It not only serves as the dash and gauge pod on the interior of the car, it is also the windshield frame. The glass it uses is 1996 Geo Metro. It is designed to bolt onto the chassis and is also held in place by the front clamshell, which lays down over top of the leading edge of the glass. This assembly deletes the windshield steel frame from the chassis plans.
Cost - $840
These pieces will be added to the order page shortly. _________________ Components, core kits, premium component kits and rollers now available |

None of the production piece, but here are a few of the prototype, which was carbon fiber overlayed:

Steve, I really like the way the dash piece looks! My only concern is there is no longer a hoop that a cage can be attached to. Rollover protection is a concern for me in my build.
I know you had talked about making a removable roof(I really like that idea)... have you thought how that might work with this new dash/windscreen piece? piece? |

The steel hoop actually still will fit below the new fiberglass piece and you can think of the fiberglass as just something to hold the windshield in place because you are correct it is not designed to be of any use in a rollover. HOWEVER... if you draw a line from the rear roll hoop to the front lower windshield mount, the car does not need a front hoop and in that sense is a lot like the new Lotus ... ah.. the one without the windshield that looks a lot like La Bala, except mine was designed 5 years earlier... THey don't have a windshield or a front rollhoop in that car.

Yeah, I can't remember what it's called, but I know the Lotus you are talking about. Guys often do something simliar to it to 914s as well. Hmm... I wonder if the groups I do events with would allow that... I'd think if they allow a 914 with the cut down windshield, the la Bala should be classed similarly.
Are you saying that the front hoop could be covered by the windshield piece, or that it would attach just behind the "triangle" part of the surround? If it doesn't fit inside, I wonder if the hoop could be pushed forward a bit and the surrounds upright widened towards the rear a little to cover the hoop more...
I need to buy the plans already!!! Argh! |

The base of the windshield pillar is hollow up to a point about 6" up, the rest of it is solid roving and incredibly strong mind you, just not a rollbar. In my design concept for the additional brace, the windshield steel tube hoop parallels the main shape of the fiberglass to a point, but slips through holes cut into this hollow area of the windshield pillar so that the steel can be tied back to the frame under the dash. This steel tube will be a complex bend that needs to be fitted manually to the lower windshield brace. None has been done this way mind you, but it is entirely doable with a little additional work. I imagine that anyone building a full-race version of the car will end up doing this modification.
But I do want to point out that anyone seeing that Lotus screaming by with 280HP and no windshield at 1800lbs wet weight will immediately realize that the Grabercar La Bala with similar design is not 'really' needing that windshield brace, but it does add an extra layer of safety and assurance. _________________ Components, core kits, premium component kits and rollers now available |
