Bodywork Progress Report - Jan 7, 2008 |
|
|
Hello Grabercars viewers - Here is a small update before the really big update, which I will be bringing to you in a few days.
I've been working feverishly on the car with my new bodywork guru
George Husar. He has been instrumental in completing the last phase of
the car. That is essentially: polish the rough edges, add a some
styling cues, clean up the interior, dash and windshield mounting
system and design a rear valance and undertray diffuser. The net
result is that the car will look much more like a manufactured car than
the garage built one-off that this whole thing started out as. I'm not
saying that one-off garage built cars are bad, not at all! But if you
want to sell a product you have to take it to the next level.
Here are some photos of the car and the new pieces being added. In
these photos it's all still very rough and quite dirty, but that's the
way it goes guys. If you can't see past the dust and dirt then you
probably aren't interested in the car for what it is. Which is a
self-built DIY low cost sportscar that is hand crafted and hand
assembled.
New integral dash and windshield frame. This is a one-piece drop-in and
bolt on unit that holds the windshield glass and is the dash and
console. Strength comes from the carbon-fiber/kevlar spars that bolt
down to the frame. |
Secondary view of the new windshield frame and dash. You can also see
the carbon fiber center console. The car is also being repainted a
special secret color to be revealed soon.
|
Finally, a new lower rear valance and diffuser with integral exhaust
exit. You can see it is the round exit in the center of the rear
diffuser.
|
A sequence of photos showing how the dash was prepared for cosmetic carbon fiber overlay.
|
You should realize that the windshield frame/dash combo pictured here is the prototype and will be used as a plug to create a mold from which the final production pieces will be layed up in. Having the plug layed up in the cf weave means that any fiberglass pieces layed in the molds will have a nice cf weave texture to them.
I hope you like what you see so far!
