No Windshield required by the State for registration Print E-mail

The original plan for a windshield was implemented specifically because I was under the impression that it was required by law. Then recently I noticed that several Ariel Atoms in the Phoenix area were registered for the street. If you are not familiar with the Atom, that car does not have a windshield. So I went down to the Scottsdale Arizona DMV late last week and discovered some very exciting information. The words directly from the inspectors mouth; "If the car was manufactured without a windshield then no windshield is required."

I have always thought of La Bala to a 4 wheeled sportbike (with a fairing), and having that visceral feeling of speed when traveling at any speed is an integral part of the 'Fun Quotient' when riding a sportbike...

So I cut off the windshield.

Now I am fabricating what is commonly referred to as an Aeroscreen. It is a short wind deflecting apparatus that sits in front of the cockpit to help deflect wind and turbulence over the occupants. Mine will most likely be made from a sheet of dark tinted plexiglass or possibly carbon fiber.

I started mocking the shape this weekend. Below is a very VERY rough idea of the shape. The final will have a double bump to match the rear decklid humps, and a lip on the rearmost edge to help deflect wind over the cockpit. P1010188

The option for a full windshield is always there since that has already been developed to use the Geo Metro windshield and the custom fiberglass surround I have made already. I do also have a removeable hardtop option under development for people that want it in the future.

I am interested to know what you think of this new aeroscreen development.
