This weekend was spent trying to get the car not only driveable again
(with the addition of a turbocharger) but "street-legal" too! I had
arranged with my friend Robert Bastian to have him come up to Phoenix
from Tucson on Saturday to help move the project along. Robert's the
crazy mutha that is building a twin Hayabusa (and twin
turbo-charged!) La Bala.
Friday evening I sat down and
made a page-long list of items to try to get finished Saturday. After I printed it out I decided that there was no way we would be able
to get everything done in one day, but what the hell, at least we had a
goal! When Saturday rolled around Robert showed up at the shop, but he
also brought reinforcement - Tim! They were both dressed nicely, unlike
myself in the oily-grubs and so I thought - oh no.... Sightseer's...
But looks can be deceiving, and those two fella's had me fooled. After a little
look around the car I said, "so you guys wanna help or what?" and
that's all it took. Two minutes flat and Rob and Tim were in their work
clothes and latched onto projects. It was awesome to have two
completely competent gentlemen wrenching, welding, grinding, milling,
lathing and just basically kicking ass on my to-do list! We put a huge dent in that list and the items we didn't get finished were due to me not having all the required parts. Apparently I've been very lucky to have competent people helping me throughout the course of this project. Thanks Rob and Tim. You are welcome to help me any time!
Robert Installing the EDIS 36-1 ring and VR sensor

Tim fabricating the e-brake handle brackets
Here are a few more photos after we finished for the day:
Turbo piping almost completed. Just need to finish the bracket for the intercooler and plumb the line from the intercooler to the throttle body. Note the 365cc Injectors from an 1989 MR2 GZE, the cone filter intake down at the center of the engine bay and the blow-off valve vented to atmosphere. Phwooshhh.
EDIS toothed ring and VR sensor mounted to engine. All sensors are installed and now waiting for MegaSquirt n' Extra - EDIS installation.
LED tail lights and a clear view of the deDion with Watts link. Notice that the Air Flow meter is gone and the piping to the Intercooler is almost completed.

High perspective photo taken from the bed of my truck. Notice the headlight bucket inside the windshield, and you can also make out the e-brake handle in the side-pod between the rails (beside the leg). Sharp eyes might also notice that the 4AGE distributor is now removed from the head and replaced with a block-off plate.
I'm feeling very positive about having the
car titled and street-legal before the July 15th Arizona Motorsport event out at
Firebid International Raceway. Hope to see some of you there!
