September 20, 2004 - Wow, some progress at last Print E-mail
All work and no play makes Steve a very dull boy. I had to take a break from work so that I don't end up in  a mental institution. The weekend was filled with parties, housework and yes, even a few hours in the garage...

Progress? Yes indeed. My friend Jim Williams and I went to Davis Salvage in downtown Phoenix last Saturday morning to see if we could find some suitable aluminum tubes to house my 4" round led tail lights.

We found a bunch of neat stuff at Davis Salvage. Most of it stacked 20 feet high all around us... All sizes, shapes and lengths of stainless tubing suitable for fabricating headers, aluminum sheets of all thickness and sizes. That place is a gold mine. There was a stack of discarded aluminum road signs in one area that was stacked taller than a house. Some of the signs were larger than the undertray of a car... nice (gotta think ahead on the next one). Jim and I spent a long time just walking around looking at the stuff and talking about how it might be used in car building. Pretty neat. In the end we did find some ali tubes that will work great with my tail lights. .

Tail lights - You can see that the 4" LED truck tail lights I bought last month on Ebay fit perfectly inside the tubes Jim and I selected at the salvage yard. The ID of the tube is 4.5" and the OD is 5". The tubes are of a fairly rough cast aluminum and are a bit thick, but they aren't too heavy and I think that they look pretty nice. Side by side they are a good fit with the size of the car. I spent some time cutting holes in the rear of the car to slip the tubes into so that I could get a better feel for the look. Pretty sweet looking if I can brag, and I am pleased. Now I just have to figure out what to do about the rough casting. Maybe I can have them turned on a lathe... Anyone care to volunteer to clean up my ali tail light tubes?

Bodywork reshaping - One thing I know from making this website is that the car looks different in person than it does in photographs or even on video. You guys just can't see the little nuances in the shape that I stare at day after day. And believe it or not, there are a number of areas of the car shape that just sort of 'bug' me. Areas that I stare at day after day, not quite certain which direction to take, but knowing that I will change it. Sunday I made a decision to reshape the top of the door all the way from the front fender to the back fender. I thought that it originally looked too much like a swayback pony. I reshaped the line so that it is no longer concave. I will try to post some illustrative photos once I have refined the shape more. But in any case that line swayback line no longer bothers me and I guess that's all that matters.
