Progress Report for July 27th, 2004 Print E-mail

Well, I really did it this time. I managed to throw my back out while applying the drywall filler to the rear decklid. The resulting spasms in my lower back have laid me out flat on my back from Saturday till this morning. This being Tuesday, I managed to get a full day of work in at the office (because the world doesn't stop turning... ever), but now I am back in bed, and on my back. Luckily I had the foresight some months ago to buy a firewall and wireless LAN for my laptop. It really is handy as now I can compute well into the night and not budge a single back muscle!

Not to despair though, I really DID make some good progress on Saturday, AND this Tuesday afternoon, as you will soon find out...

Saturday was another broiler at 108f. It's really not that fun to work in that type of environment. After I slathered a bunch of new plaster onto the front, sides and rear of the car, I decided to roll her out into the open for some progress report shots. I also shot a quick video, which I haven't uploaded to my server yet, but I'll let everyone know when it is up.

Tuesday - I lost my entire diary entry for July 27th in a freak network failure... This is a re-write. Wednesday Morning -Unfortunately half-way through my Tuesday night rewrite we lost power at the house and since all of this is stored in a database server-side I lost it all again! Is someone trying to tell me something? So... this being the 3rd time I have created this diary entry, it will be slightly abbreviated from the 1st two attempts... sorry.
I really like some of the lines of the car,  I especially like the curve of the front fenders and I think the lines along the side of the car are pretty nice... for the most part... but I find certain areas that increasingly bother me. The rear fender up by the taillight is one such area that is not quite pleasing me.
It's quite obvious to me from the photos that there is much to be done to get the car to a proper state of finish.
I think it was very beneficial to have the car outside at this time. It really shows where I have come, but even more importantly to me, where I have to go.
Is this what it would look like with the door off? LOL I had planned to finish this side of the car and refine my shapes with more plaster when my back went south.
Based on comments I received from my favorite hangout www.locostbuilders.co.uk I have decided to scrap the Jeep Liberty tail lights and go back to an earlier design utilizing a pair of 5" round lights in aluminum bezels on each side.
Ever since I decided to use those Liberty lights I have been struggling to make the rear of the car work visually. You can see the difference between the two shapes here in Blue and Yellow. I had almost convinced myself that the shape was ok. But in reality I had been ignoring it because I really wanted just be lazy and slap some lights back there...
Peteff (and others) on the locostbuilders forum managed to jolt me into action and make the change back to my original shape. Thanks Guys. Locostbuilders is a fantastic forum. The quality of information is extremely high and there is a real sense of cameraderie amongst the builders.
Here you can see that two 5" rounds still have a similar look to the Jeep Liberty lights, but the rear of the car is drastically improved by this one change.
These renders were made using 3DS Max 6 on a dual P4 2.4gig with 1gig of RAM and an Nvidia Gforce FX5600 256Meg video card driving dual 21" NEC monitors. It's nice to be able to rotate and view the complete mesh in real-time.
